Get Organized Now!
There are few things more frustrating to a parent than those occasions when, in the middle of a messy
diaper change, they find themselves lacking some necessary item. If that item is elsewhere in the
house, it’s merely an inconvenience. If the item is at the grocery store or pharmacy, it’s a major hassle.

Here's a blueprint for stocking your home changing area, so you’ll never find yourself in the above-
mentioned situation again.

What you’ll need
  • Diapers
  • Diapering accessories (if using cloth diapers)
  • Baby Wipes or soft terry washcloths
  • Washable changing pad (or a clean towel)
  • Baby powder (talc-free is best)
  • Diaper rash cream
  • Baby lotion
  • Laundry basket
  • Diaper pail (if using cloth diapers)
  • Covered waste basket
  • Clean ‘onesies’ or other underclothing

Every changing area should have its own set of products and necessary items.  These items should be
considered immovable; you should purchase a second set of products for your diaper bag, not only to
avoid searching for lost items, but so that you always have spare products on hand.

Organizing Baby’s Changing Area
I always say, planning is organizing, and organizing is all about planning.  If you plan for the next
diaper change as soon as you finish this one, you’ll spend a lot less time searching for items, and a little
more time enjoying your time with baby.

  • The changing table should be in baby’s room – or, if the bedroom is not easily accessible from the
part of your house where you spend the most time, in a convenient corner.
  • Make sure all your supplies are within easy reach. If your changing table doesn’t have built-in
storage for products and diapers, a shelf on the wall or a caddy attached to the side of the table
keeps necessary products close at hand.
  • If baby’s bureau is doubling as a changing table (a great option for smaller spaces), reserve the
top drawer for diapers and diapering products.
  • Always have a spare: keep new packages of your favorite products in the changing table drawer,
or in your diaper caddy if there’s room. That way, you never run out of diaper cream in the middle
    of a change.
  • If you’re always roaming around the house with baby, create a diaper caddy.  A sturdy basket
with a handle or even a shower caddy would work.  Fill your diaper caddy with necessary
products, spare onesies and underclothes, and a changing pad to cover floor or table.
  • If you’re using flannelettes instead of disposable wipes, make a trip to the sink for hot water
before undressing your little one. Keep a hamper or plastic bag handy to catch dirty washcloths.
  • Hang a towel or dry washcloth from a hook near the changing table to wipe lotion or diaper
cream from your hands before dressing baby: this helps to prevent greasy lotion stains.
  • Keep a spare changing pad or table cover handy. When you toss the dirty changing pad in the
laundry, immediately replace it with the clean one to avoid unnecessary juggling later.

Remember: a little organization goes a long way. Every system you develop can help your routines run
a little more smoothly - and that's a bonus for every parent!
