It doesn’t matter if you’re a briefcase-toting professional, a homemaker, or a fashionista: when you’re
out with baby, the diaper bag becomes ‘Le Bag’.  Luckily, there are so many fashionable and functional
diaper bag options out there today that you won’t have to sacrifice your personal style.  You might
even consider buying two bags in different sizes, so you don’t have to bring out the big guns for a
simple trip to the market.  Backpacks are another great option for both moms and dads; they’re roomy,
distribute weight more evenly, and free up both of your hands.

Green diaper bag options include organic canvas and cotton, free-trade products from India or South
America (available at many free-trade shops or indie boutiques), and bags made from recycled
materials.
English Retreads makes incredible, stylish bags and accessories from recycled tires. Check
out
ecomall.com, a site which lists hundreds of organic and free-trade retailers.

Once you've chosen Le Bag, you'll need to fill it. Choose Green products whenever possible to prevent
baby from ingesting or absorbing unnecessary chemicals. Here are some suggestions.

  • Diapers: choose biodegradable disposable diapers, like those from Tushies, or go for cloth. The
new organic cloth diapers are nothing like the ones our mothers used, and they’re also money-
    savers.

  • Toys: many baby products, like teething rings, toys, and pacifiers, are made from toxic PVC.  For
alternatives available in your area, check out PVC information sites like pvcinformation.org. Also
of interest, this article on toy solutions from National Geographic's Green Guide.

  • Baby care products: diaper care creams, lotions, powders, and other baby care products often
contain petroleum-based emollients and toxic chemical ingredients. Companies to check out
include Burt’s Bees, (now available almost everywhere), Erbaviva, and Aubrey Organics.  Also,
look for herbal, ayurvedic, or homeopathic pain relievers, teething gels, and diaper rash
ointments, which can produce fewer side effects and are safe for daily use – but always consult a
pediatrician about any prolonged or severe symptoms, and about high or sustained fevers.

  • Clothes: organic cotton baby clothes, blankets, nursing pads, and other cloth items are becoming
more popular every day, and are free of pesticide residues, chemical dyes, and toxic fabric
treatments. Find dozens of retailers at ecomall.com.
