The first step to organizing your diaper bag like a pro is to choose what needs to go in it. You want to
be prepared, but you don't want to lug around unnecessary items, either. Here's a basic list:

  • 6 – 10 Diapers (if you’re using cloth, also diaper covers, pins, and any liners/inserts you’re using,
and a plastic bag to hold the dirties).
  • Diaper Rash Cream
  • Wipes (look for travel-sized containers)
  • Changing pad (or a thick, soft towel)
  • Change of clothing (seal it inside a clean pouch or plastic bag just in case)
  • Organizer pouch or plastic bag for soiled clothes
  • Teething gel
  • Infant pain reliever/fever reducer
  • Sunscreen for both summer and winter.  Choose natural sunscreens containing zinc oxide or
titanium dioxide, rather than chemically-based formulas.
  • 2 Bibs
  • 2 Burp Cloths
  • 2 Pacifiers, if your baby likes them
  • 1 small blanket
  • 2 toys (change frequently to keep baby interested)
  • 1 or 2 chunky books
  • Luggage tag (attached inside, so a lost bag can find its way home)
  • Insulated bottle holder, powdered formula, and bottled water for mixing
  • Or, Nursing pads if you’re breastfeeding
  • Extra shirts for Mom and Dad (just in case)
  • Disposable camera – for those spontaneous photo ops!

Now that you have all your stuff, you need to fit it all in your tote.  Here’s how to organize your diaper
bag like a pro - no matter what size or style of bag you've chosen.

  • Compartmentalize:  create a ‘filing system’ in your bag’s interior, even if your bag has no built-in
    dividers.
  • Use waterproof pouches, airtight plastic containers (look for non-PVC) or zippered plastic storage
bags to hold loose items like toys, pacifiers, and clean clothing, so they aren’t contaminated by
soiled apparel even if the ‘dirties’ bag leaks. To make the last option more eco-friendly, buy
recycled plastic zippered bags – or wash, disinfect with hydrogen peroxide, and reuse.
  • If you choose plastic containers, label each one so you know what’s in it.
  • Store Mom and Dad stuff in unique containers or different colored bags to distinguish them from
    those holding baby’s things.
  • Make a habit of returning each item to its place in your filing system.
  • Remove, Replace, Reorganize.  Every evening, sort through the diaper bag.  Remove any used or
soiled items, and any products that are running low. Replace them with clean ones and new
products, and Reorganize the bag’s interior.
  • If you’re like most parents, you’ll get attached to certain brands of products and supplies.  Keep
a bag or bin full of essentials like diapers, onesies, and baby care products in the trunk of your
car, so you’ll never run out.

Life with kids is hectic. But you can streamline your daily routines by making simple changes, assigning
every item a home, and – most importantly – planning ahead.
